By: Rory H. Hawkins

What is a safety glass? You know it popularly as a safety glass used in the vehicles. The use of safety glasses is more prominent in the automobile industry. Actually when you ride a car or any other vehicle, it is with the help of the safety glass that you keep a track on the traffic. In broader terms, the safety glass is divided into two categories, laminated safety glass and tempered safety glass.

Making of laminated safety glass

Laminated safety glass was first manufactured in 1927. The name then given to it was auto glass. What is the whole idea about lamination? Two pieces of glass are hold together with a thin coat of polyvinyl butyral which can commonly be treated as a plastic film. This is done to enhance the strength of the glass. If all of a sudden the glass breaks down, the damage will be minor and there will be chances of getting injured.

Uses and Advantages of laminated safety glass

Laminated glasses are best used for dividing the office into departments on a single floor. It is cost-effective with no wastage of space and at the same time privacy can be well maintained.

In the similar way, laminated safety glass is used in the windows of greenhouse. This helps in the accurate control and regulation of light. It is also used in little but sophisticated tools like the thermometers to measure your body temperature.

What makes laminated safety glass so advantageous? Laminated safety glasses have the maximum inhibition capacity to block the ultraviolet radiation. That goes even up to more than 95%. This type of safety glass acts as a solid barrier to high frequency sound. That is why the corporate offices mostly select it for setting up the work station.

Common uses of tempered safety glass

The glasses used as rearing glasses in your cars and other vehicles are mostly tempered safety glass. The pair of spectacles you wear is also made of tempered safety glass. What is the secret behind being tempered? In fact the glass is a single piece of glass and is subjected to various temperatures. This type of glass shows the potentiality to resist the extreme temperatures and thus is at least ten times stronger than any other type of safety glass. This is the most convenient glass material for computer screens, LCD monitors and micro oven shutters. Though the chances of breaking of tempered safety glasses are low but if broken, they shatter into thousands of pieces.
