You must have come across the sight that two or three men are lifting a disabled person and helping him to move into the train. And the other two are lifting the wheelchair and putting it inside the cabin. What a fuss! Is this a sensible way to board a physically challenged person on the train? What is wheelchair lift then meant for? Of course there are wheelchair lifts available to resolve this problem of boarding physically disabled people on trains and also to cross the platforms. If it is an even ground, the problem of movement is none but since two to three steps are to be covered to reach the level of the train, the movement becomes difficult. But your wheelchair lift has a fixed width and a maximum limit to cover the height. It is always better to use wheelchair ramps of the minimum width and that can cover the maximum height. So whatever is the situation, the wheelchair lift will perfectly fit in the limited space. • There are different models of wheelchair lifts used in the railways which can cover a height of 55” to 60” with easy convenience. Such lifts don’t find any problem in deciding upon the location where the train will stop and manage the distance accordingly without wasting a single second. Moreover these wheelchair lifts are provided with full protection so that the patients and the disabled passengers are not injured under any circumstance. When such easy boarding mechanisms are available, is it really difficult to plan for a long tour with someone physically disabled? Carry the person on the wheelchair and the rest will be done by the wheelchair lift to board him/her in and out of the rail car.
