General information about strep throat

By: Groshan Fabiola

Strep throat is actually a very common infection in people that is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (strep) Group A bacteria. It has been seen that children tend to be the ones that get infected, in comparison to adults.

Symptoms in strep throat are actually very simple to interpret, and even a normal person can tell what the illness is about. Children most often complain about sore throat, headaches and stomach aches and might also develop fever. Another physical symptom that might appear is swollen and tender glands in the neck, and sores around the nose. In some rare cases, but more severe, like scarlet fever, the patient might have a sore throat accompanied by more general symptoms such as fatigue, and sometimes a red flash on the body that feels much like sandpaper. In even more severe cases children can develop some serious complications like rheumatic fever or acute glomerulonephritis. This happens mostly when the first infection is not treated properly and complications appear.

This disease is generally transmitted by air, when a sick patient coughs or sneezes. What happens is that tiny amount of saliva are released into the air; they are than breathed in by a normal healthy person. The spread of the disease can only be stopped by treating the sick person that is infected.

In order to give a proper diagnose the doctor must make a thorough check of the patient. They most often have to take a culture, or swab, of the patients throat in order to see if the bacteria is present. If strep throat is the actual diagnose that is given, the doctor will then prescribe antibiotics that the ill person must take in order to fight the infection. The most used antibiotic is of course penicillin. It can be taken either by pill , liquid or unfortunately for some by injections. As in most of the other disease it is best to apply the treatment as soon as the diagnose has been given. If this done than the child patient will feel better in a matter of days. This is also indicated in order to prevent further complications.

Patients can actually prevent the onset of the illness, or act as soon as possible after diagnosing the condition. They can watch the kids for any visible signs of strep throat, if any cases are known around them. It is good to encourage proper dental hygiene and salt gargling in order to prevent any infection. It is best to consult the medic if strep throat is believed to be active and also to start treatment as soon as possible. Giving proper doses of antibiotic is also highly recommended. Proper hygiene facts like hand washing and mouth covering when couching is good to be taught to the child. Skipping some days in school would be a good idea in order to prevent the spreading of the infection.
