Things to Consider Before Buying Safety Glasses

By: Rory H. Hawkins

We often come across the term safety glasses, but do not bother to know about them in details because we do not belong to a profession where using safety glasses are mandatory. But try to recount our activities at home! We use kinds of chemicals for cleaning or several other purposes and the fumes emanating from the chemicals can damage our eyes. Then we often use the types of power tools like saws or sanders that may hurl at your eyes harmful particles. Above all we often come into close contact with flames and the possibilities are limitless where your eyes can get permanently damaged, not in an industrial environment, but right at your home. But you can prevent such mishap very easily, by buying safety glasses for you and the other members of your family. Even if you are not well accustomed with the nuances of safety glasses, don’t bother. Consult the guide below to know what points you should take into consideration while buying a pair of safety glasses.

To begin with, do not treat the safety glasses just like another fashion accessory as sunglass. The safety glasses are meant to provide shield to your eyes from all kinds of external damages. So while buying the safety glasses, do not get baffled by their looks. Check, whether the glasses meet with the standards applicable for the country of your residence.
For example, in the USA, it is the ANSI Z87 standards that are followed to judge the quality of the safety glasses. You can find out whether the glasses have passed the standard tests by looking at the marking on the frame and the manufacturer's initials. If the lenses have any special attributes that are also printed on its lenses.

Lenses are the crucial parts of the safety glasses and since it is the question of protecting the most precious organs of your body, do not compromise on the quality to get the cheaper versions. Always buy the product made of highest quality material. Buy only the safety glasses that are made of high quality, virgin resin polycarbonate material. You can get cheaper versions, made with recycled resins. But these glasses are not durable, and come with a high degree of distortions.

Before buying the safety glasses, make sure that they come with zero distortion lenses, as these lenses allow you see more clearly and you can wear them for longer periods of time without feeling any strain in the eyes.

Make sure that the safety glass fits you properly. Otherwise it fails to serve the purposes. So consider such things as width of the frame, width of the nosepiece, length of the temples, and angle of the temples with respect to the lenses.

Also look for the added features depending on the objectives for which you intend to use the glasses. These features include side shields, anti-fog lens coating, UVA/UVB filtering, special lens colors, vented frames to increase airflow and so on.

Just think about your eyes and the role they play in your life. Be careful in choosing your safety glasses and stay relaxed that these priceless possessions of yours rest behind the strongest shield.
